SEMINAR “searching for traces of Gurs”

The second and last part of the online seminar took place at the end of January. The focus was the exhibition “Gurs 1940. The Deportation and Murder of Jews from Southwestern Germany” (House of the Wannsee Conference memorial, Berlin).

The texts and images were already available to us before the April 2021 exhibition opening in Berlin. In October, the Blaue Haus in Breisach will install these as a permanent exhibition, along with the results of local research. We are grateful for the trust the curator of the exhibition, Christoph Kreutzmüller, has shown in us and for the great opportunity he has given us to make use of the panels.

Christiane Walesch-Schneller presented the story behind the exhibition; then the students tackled the main topics in small groups, coming up with ways to interest visitors using a contribution, an introduction or a question for each theme.

Following this compact online seminar, do the students now feel prepared to share what they know about Breisach‘s Jewish community, the deportation to Gurs and the role of Breisach’s bridge in the deportation? Hopefully they will soon have the opportunity to try this out in the real world.
